Cribb v Molineaux Boxing Jug

Cribb v Molineaux Boxing Jug

Catalogue No: J098

£ 1150.00

Description:

A powerful Jug, strikingly coloured in canary yellow with silver lustre borders and a shaped handle. The monochrome transfers on both sides show the two boxers standing in a fighting stance, their respective names printed below. The image probably derives from a print published by Smeeton in 1812  made just after the second fight between the ex slave Tom Molinueax from the USA and the English Champion Tom Cribb. The contest was watched by a crowd of 15,000 and received massive publicity. After an epic battle, Cribb won in the 35th round! Superb.
